Welcome to the National Provident Fund website

This site provides information about NPF and the 11 NPF superannuation schemes.

The NPF superannuation schemes are unique in New Zealand as they are Government guaranteed, which means members can always be sure their benefits are secure.

All 11 NPF superannuation schemes are closed to new members.  However, if you were a member of an NPF scheme on 31 March 1991 you may be eligible to join certain NPF schemes.

Important Notices

Appointment of Datacom as NPF Scheme Administration Manager

The Board of Trustees of the National Provident Fund (the Board) is pleased to advise that Datacom Employer Services Limited (Datacom) has been appointed as the Scheme Administration Manager for the NPF schemes.

Administration of the NPF schemes was previously undertaken by Jacques Martin New Zealand Limited.  Jacques Martin is withdrawing from the business of schemes administration.

Datacom is a subsidiary of Datacom Group which is 100% New Zealand owned, with annual revenues of approximately $600 million, employing over 3,000 staff in New Zealand (in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch) and another 700 in Australia and Asia.  Datacom Group ownership is 30% by New Zealand Post and 70% by the staff and directors of the company.

Datacom provides payroll administration, benefit payment, call centre and information technology services to a wide range of clients such as the Government Superannuation Fund Authority, the Ministry of Education, the Reserve Bank, Kiwibank and NZ Blood Services.

Datacom's appointment is effective from 1 December 2009.

Contact details for Datacom, from 1 December 2009, are as follows:

The Board and Datacom are committed to ensuring the transition from Jacques Martin to Datacom is as seamless as possible for all concerned and that members, contributors and employers are not affected by the change.

Investment market volatility

Members will be aware, and perhaps even concerned, about the current upheavals in the investment markets.  Members of the NPF schemes should not be alarmed by these events.  While you are a member of your current NPF scheme, your benefit is guaranteed by the Government.

The Board monitors the funding position of all the NPF schemes on a regular basis.  If the schemes ever reached a point where there were insufficient assets available to pay benefits when they fall due, a call would be made on the Government guarantee.

NPF's alternative to KiwiSaver

As an employee and a NPF member you can benefit from many of the attributes of KiwiSaver and receive the unique features that only NPF schemes provide:

  • An earnings rate of at least 4% per annum, after tax and expenses
  • Government guarantee of benefits

There are two NPF schemes that offer these benefits: the Locked-in sections of the Pension National Scheme and the Lump Sum National Scheme. Click here to read more.

Unclaimed Monies

The Board of Trustees of the National Provident Fund holds money for a number of members with whom contact has been lost. If you think some of this money may be yours click here to read more.
